Belgium — Residence permit: Turkish documents

In Belgium the municipality is where a residence file begins and where it is judged. That single fact determines who you should be asking questions of.

The municipality decides the list

Not a national page, not a regional one. Municipalities apply the framework in their own way and differ in what they accept, so the list to work from is the one your commune gives you. Ask for it in writing at the first contact — it is the document that saves the most time in the whole process.

Deadlines that do not wait

Registration after arrival is subject to short deadlines, and those deadlines do not pause while documents travel from Türkiye. Ask the commune what it needs at registration and what may follow later — the two lists are rarely identical, and knowing the difference lets you meet the deadline with a partial file rather than miss it with a complete one.

Order the perishable ones last

A criminal record extract and a current register extract age quickly, and the limit is set by the receiving office. Obtain permanent records first — they take longer to retrieve if anything goes wrong — and leave the short-lived ones until the rest is nearly ready.

Which Turkish authority endorses what

A criminal record extract is a judicial document and its apostille comes from the judicial commission at the courthouse, not the provincial governorate. Civil status records go to the governorate. See which authority for which document.

Language and translator

Both are decided by the commune’s linguistic area and, for the translator, by the national register. Settle both before ordering anything. See French or Dutch.

You do not need to travel

Family members registered together

Where a spouse or children are included in the file, each person needs their own set of records and the relationship between them has to be documented rather than stated. A detailed population register extract does much of that work in a single page, which is why communes ask for it so often. Order one covering the whole family rather than separate extracts per person where the registry allows it — fewer documents, one apostille, and no risk of inconsistent spellings between them.
