Getting married in Switzerland

The file turns on one Turkish document that surprises people: a certificate showing there is no impediment to marriage. Obtaining it is straightforward — unless an earlier marriage was never dissolved in the Turkish register.

Accepted under conditions

The translation may be made in Türkiye, but it is accepted only once the correct certification chain is complete. If the order is broken, the file comes back.

A Swiss marriage file involving a Turkish citizen has a preparatory stage, and it is at that stage that Turkish documents are examined.

The document people do not expect

A certificate confirming that there is no impediment to your marriage under Turkish law. It is a standard Turkish document, obtained from the civil registry, and it is almost always requested. See certificate of no impediment.

The situation that blocks it

An earlier marriage that was never dissolved in the Turkish register — usually because a divorce granted abroad was never recognised in Türkiye. Until that is resolved, the Turkish register still shows the person as married, and no certificate of capacity will be issued. Recognition is a separate court procedure measured in months. If either partner has been married before, check this first, before booking anything. See recognition of a divorce.

The rest of the file

  • Birth record in the detailed version.
  • A register extract showing current civil status.
  • Passport, and proof of residence in the commune.

Multilingual versions

Some Turkish civil status records can be issued on standardised multilingual forms. Where the registry office accepts them, translation may be unnecessary — a real saving on a file with several records. Ask before ordering: acceptance depends on the office, and the standardised form does not always carry the annotations a marriage file needs. See multilingual records.

Timing

The certificate of capacity has a limited period of use, and so does the preparatory procedure. Obtaining it too early is as unhelpful as obtaining it too late. Establish the procedural window first, then work backwards through apostille and translation.

Registering the marriage in Türkiye afterwards

A marriage celebrated in Switzerland does not appear in the Turkish register until it is transcribed there. Until then the Turkish spouse remains recorded as single, which blocks anything that depends on marital status. See transcription of a marriage.

Names after marriage

If a name changes, make sure the change is reflected consistently in both systems. A passport in one name and a register in another produces a block at every subsequent counter.

Two registries, one marriage

A marriage celebrated in Switzerland exists in Swiss records immediately and in Turkish records only after transcription. Couples routinely handle the Swiss side thoroughly and postpone the Turkish one, then find it blocking something years later — a property transfer, a child’s registration, an inheritance. Treat the two registrations as a single task with two halves rather than as one task and an optional follow-up.
